Tara Dunsmore is a 4-year breast cancer survivor, nurse, and a Certified Areola tattoo artist. At the age of 39, Tara was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. She had a lumpectomy followed by a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, which included tissue expanders.
Many appointments and "fill ups" later, Tara had her exchange surgery in December of 2012. Next came nipple reconstruction and fat grafting in March of 2013.
During her many appointments with her plastic surgeon, she inquired about consulting with an areola tattoo specialist, but her plastic surgeon had no one to whom she could refer. Tara had searched for that "expert" and was unable to find a specialist.
After her search, she decided to have her areola tattooing performed by a nurse in the plastic surgeon's office. This process consisted of picking a circle size and choosing a color between bubble gum pink, chocolate brown, or nude. Feeling that these options were unacceptable for her as well as other survivors, she told her plastic surgeon she was going to train with the best teacher in the country and come back to offer expert 3D areola tattooing to all survivors. She vowed to give patients exactly what they desire--whatever color or size they requested, she would always provide a realistic appearance.
Tara trained day and night with the best, and knew that this was her calling. She knew she could take her medical knowledge, breast cancer experience, and intense tattoo training to come back and help other survivors complete their journeys.
In April of 2014, Tara founded Pink Ink Tattoo, LLC.
Tara is an activist for early detection and supporter of many breast cancer foundations. She is certified in Areola Complex, 3D, and Scar Camouflage Tattooing as well as CPR. She also has an active North Carolina Nursing License.
